I NEED HELP!

Black or White? It's the question that even Michael Jackson mulls over in his head late at night, sorry bad joke can you tell I'm not a fan of his? Anyway I do need your Help/Input/Decorating advice!!! I need to choose a paint color for my huge TV Cabinet. My lovely SIL Lisa gave it to me, I just love furniture adoption & now I feel the need to paint the beast and I was leaning toward black but now am second guessing my choice. Will it look like a huge mammoth black box in the corner? And if I go with white or another color well... I JUST DON'T KNOW. Please ladies I know you are all out there lurking, leave your 2 cents I would so appreciate it & so would Michael. :)
Yes I see the unpainted door trim and no I'm not going to paint it yet. Have to finish the trim first. I'm beginning to dislike old homes....
And yes that's a screen door on the front. It used to be the door that lead down to the basement of my Grandparents grocery store many years ago, like when my dad was a kid years ago. My Uncle Danny even wrote his name on the inside of the door when he was a wee little lad. I think that is the original paint color on the door I was thinking of sanding it down to just the wood but haven't got that far yet. Oh and I will be replacing the fabric in the screen door. It was in style back in the day but now? yuck! The Nester would cringe if she saw this baby.
Side notes: I have All white trim in the room with some black accents like a shelf with black picture frames and large clock. I also have a white shelf that holds my scrap layouts. My furniture is floral tapestry that will be replaced hopefully next year and
ya know what? Never mind this gibberish I'll just post some pics instead.....

Okay here are some pictures from to many years ago of our living room/dining room before I hung stuff on walls (fresh drywall, didn't want to damage it) and pre-trim. Don't mind all the un-finishedness of it all. I would take new pictures but it's dark and I don't wanna.. ;)
Oh, I also was thinking of repainting that large white shelved piece of furniture below she is the keeper of all things good and holy like our DVD'S. Should I keep her white or paint that bead board beauty black? The crown on it is finished now. But at least you get a little view of the 2 rooms connected and the paint & floor colors.
Phew did you catch all that? Hope so- again any advice would be greatly loved & appreciated. Thanks!

  1. Wow, the first to comment. To be honest, I saw "Black or white" and saw the picture and my first impression was white. ... won't be offended if you go black =)

  2. Ok, this is my pregnant flakey tired brain talking but I say white. Here's my reasoning- It's kind of a skinny sucker and if you paint it black, black is a slimming color so it would look even skinnier, or does that only work on people?

I told you I'd be no help. I thought you were talking about the white movie cupboard earlier. Hey, the red trees are gone!

  3. I like black. I think accents like that (and its a cool one) need to pop out. I love all your trim work.

  4. I'm voting white as you have another white cabinet. And if you don't like it it's easy to paint it black!

  5. My vote is black. I am redoing an armoire myself and I staining a really dark color. So my vote is dark.

  6. I think white would look better with your house...also, I think that black would make it too much of a black hole...

    JMO...

  7. I say white with a black door.

  8. I think black too, for both pieces. The white seems to blend in with all the beautiful white you have and I think painting them black would make them pop right out. They are nice pieces...

  9. Black beauty baby-- okay I'm a nerd. I try to be cool sometimes, and then just realize, I'm not. I would paint both lovely pieces black. There you have it, although that is exactly what I told you on the phone last week and you still felt the need to ask for more opinions, so maybe my vote doesn't even matter. Thanks alot Rachel. I'm done ranting now.

  10. How about you paint it white and paint that green door black? Then do a new toile black and white fabric on the inside. That just screams YOU! :)

  11. I say white... but I know you are also partial to black. as far as it going better with the living room, that's why I say white. Unless you are going to have more black in the room "eventually"

  12. Good heavens... all I'd like to know is how you find time to do all this stuff with 5 kids! I try to do laundry and with the twins out of sight for less than 3 minutes, they were in DEEP messes!!!

  13. ok-you have quite a mix here. Which color are you going to pick. My professional advice-(remeber people actually pay me to tell them my opinion-Not that really makes a difference-just thought I would sound more important that way. Did it work? Anyway-
Pull out the red AND black spray paint.
Red all over first-espesially on the edges. Then spray it black. Get a shiny finish. I like it better for bigger peices.
Let it dry acouple of hours. The spray paint seems dry-but it isn't. Anyway-sand the edges and then pull out the polyurethane. Oh baby-I am giddy just thinking about what it could look like. A cute toille fabric. Maybe a red metal star haning on a small cup hook. Super cute!! I would paint the large cupboard black as well. I think that black is a forever color. It is a neutral that goes with everything.
PLUS-it doesn't show dirty, jammy, peanutbuttery finger prints. Just saying! I know that you wanted that much of my opnion-know you will sleep better-right? Whatever you decide-hurry up and do it so we can see what the final peice looks like!!

  14. Ok, so when are you going to tell us what you decided??

  15. I say the blue or the green from your blog! (seriously, those colors would look so cute distressed!)

Or if you don't like those options... Black.

  16. Black all the way. And I say the same for Michael -- I wish he'd go with black and keep it that way.

Thanks for visiting my blog -- I had already drawn the winner -- sorry you missed out. I am selling the quiet bags, though. Go to my blog for details.

    Love your blog!

  17. Oooo, what is the color of the walls in the dining room? I have a similar color in my living room, but lighter, your color is much richer...and we are re-doing our living room soon...this might be just the color I need :)

    Thanks!

  18. First of all you are so blessed to have such a bit of your history in that room...Im loving the green as is....But as far as the black/white??? Im thinking maybe black but a very washed black. Like where you can still see some of the wood . Paint it real good then san that baby down on the edges to make it go with that door. I would so not touch that door... It's so great. Im cant wait to see what you decide... I know whatever it will be you will make it great... Hurry though I cant stand the wait, smile.... Susie h~

  19. I came over to visit from Tausha. I am her neighbor & friend.
First I love old houses. Why are you beginning to dislike it? How old is it?
About the cabinet, I love the old door. I would just sand it a little and change the fabric. The rest of the cabninet, hmmm.... maybe google old cabinets and see what comes up to inspire you. or look through a furniture catalogue and see what you can find.

  20. Here's a little twist, how about refinishing it? HA HA HA HA, that wouldn't take long, heheheheheheh or something like that. I don't, I like how its' already distressed, I might add to the distressed look, do it white (actually I honestly would refinish it, I love wood). -K_ White with red distressed, that's my final answer.

  21. Hi! Found your site through The Nester. Your home is lovely!
As for the cabinet. My vote is black...just not solid black. What about doing a wash of black? Somewhat distressed like the green on the screen door? But not even as solid as the green. More washed on. In my humble opinion, there is already alot of whiote going on between the two rooms. I agree with one commentor who mentioned black being "slimming".
BUT, whatever you choose I am sure will be adorable....as teh rest of what I've seen is! Good luck!

  22. First off, I would leave the door as is! It has history and why would you want to cover that with a trendy color choice?
Second, I would choose a muted color for the big tv cabinet. It's a HUGE piece and you want it to compliment the room, not overpower it. What about using the color chip that you picked your wall color from, and go a shade lighter? Then either sand it or glaze it, or both, to bring back some of the "aged" character. Then add a beautiful, fabric behind that picks up the colors in your room---maybe with a smaller print.
Third, (like we're counting here?) I like the dining room cabinet in white. It blends with your woodwork and almost appears to be a built in.
That's my free advice, for all it's worth. Good Luck!

  23. And just a side note from someone who seems to paint all things black...it's shows EVERYTHING! You'll never know how much dusting you have to do until you have a black piece of furniture to let you know. It's like having a beautiful black convertible---you love the way it looks until you take it out for a drive and have to wash it all the time.
Just a warning! I'm not trying to make your mind up for you.

  24. I say RED! But definatley distress it and leave the door as is just change the fabric to express your fun style! Good Luck!

  25. I think a very distressed black...

    I love that piece...

stoped over for Susie..enjoyed your blog....

  26. I really like black furniture however I think white may look best, try that and then I'll let ya know! Good luck!

  27. So I'm thinking black, but then I really like black maybe too much. The armoire that we have our television in is black and it doesn't seem like too much. It's a little distressed though so that helps. I think it would look cool with some toile fabric. I love your home it's beautiful. Someday I'm going to have to bug you to teach me to do a signature at the bottom of my blog like yours.

  28. Wow..how are you ever going to decide now. I say go with what our "paid" designers said...washed black is very rich looking. I was having the same decision since I picked up an antique hutch this weekend. I wanted to paint it but my hubby said...if you paint it, it will ruin the value, so who am I am to answer...I can't decide myself. I think I will take a picture and let everyone else decide. Good idea.:)

  29. ♡ I'd go white just because of all the white in the dining room and the trim but that's me... :)

  30. I'm thinking aqua w/ black accents. I need color in my life.

  31. Well this is my first visit here so I should probably keep my opinions to myself. But you convinced me to open my big mouth. I agree with someone up above in your comments, paint it a variation of your wall color. I think based on where it is in the room and how large it is, letting it fade into the background a bit might be the best solution. Good luck with whatever you decide!

    Happy day
    Melissa

  32. I am going to be no help because I would just say Black. I do love black but yet it shows EVERYTHING. And chips very easily.
On a side note, i LOVE the wall color in your kitchen/dining aread and the wood work on the walls. It looks amazing.

  34. Hi Rachel, I got here through Debra's blog and I thought I'd check it out!
I LOVE this kind of stuff so I thought I'd reply.
So...I initially said black as soon as I saw the piece! It would look really great. I have a couple of flat or eggshell (no shiny stuff) painted black with rubbed edges so it looks a little worn, and I LOVE them!!!
    HOWEVER....
When I saw the last photo, I thought for a moment it should be white because of the dining room.
I don't think you can go wrong here. Regardless, I think both pieces could be the same. Either do both white, or both black for continuity from room to room.
I think in the end, my vote is for both pieces to be a flat/eggshell black.
It will really pop and add a richer look to both spaces.
Good luck...I can't wait to check back in!

  35. My advice is really no help because, well, if you saw my house you would not want my advice, it is sooooo not cute. That is why I come look at your blog, which BTW thanks for the link to the photoshop tutorials cause I love it! And I guess I would say black!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I'm voting white with twist...a distressed/vintage-y twist...paint the base coat a flat color close to your wall color, then "whitewash" over it with an ivory, rub off the ivory where it needs to look worn. Leave the door green and wah-lah! It'll be a large piece that kind of blends in, it'll look fabulous IMHO :)Cn't wait to see what you do with it! Give us a peek as it progresses!

  37. After all those comments I'm not going to add my opinion cause well you've seen my house and yeah anyways I just want to see the finished look so just make sure you let us know!! Can't wait - I sure it will look great what ever you do. (oh I do like the idea of leaving the door like it is cause of the history but that's all I have to say 'bout that!)
